Reverse Shaming

Here’s another bit of Fake News, but one with an important, hidden message of Truth. You may have heard the outrage about Michelle Wolf’s disastrous comedy bit/speech at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.  A speech so offensive that it threatens to bring the event to termination.  But this story is being wrongly reported.  For one thing, her speech actually wasn’t offensive to the appearance of women being criticized.  But all the defenders of her speech miss the main point.  Wolf had a giant platform with which to score talking points about the need for a Free Press, given the Alternative Facts, lying, and corruption rampant in the Trump Administration.  Instead, she shot herself and the Left in the foot.  It’s the equivalent of an Own Goal in soccer.  She made Sarah Sanders and Kellyanne Conway, Mike Pence, et al into sympathetic, even heroic figures – at least for this news cycle. Yes, she derided Hillary and Ted Kennedy.  And Yes, she didn’t introduce the term “pussy” into American politics.  But she did such a ham-handed job that she served the interests of the parties most meriting criticism and shame, and served to further polarize those searching for truth in our news media.

It was a defeat as well for inclusive discourse, and bringing people together for a Greater Good.  But let’s assume that is too lofty a mission for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.  Focus instead on this: she defeated the purpose of the entire event.

When the head of the event posts this, you’ve failed:

“Last night’s program was meant to offer a unifying message about our common commitment to a vigorous and free press while honoring civility, great reporting and scholarship winners, not to divide people,” the group’s president, Margaret Talev, wrote. “Unfortunately, the entertainer’s monologue was not in the spirit of that mission.”
